Giulio Cesare

Giulio Cesare is a Handel opera that lasts for three hours and this production at the Finnish National Opera was conceived as a piece that would use only light to illustrate mood, emotional and place. The FNO opera house in Helsinki has a very sophisticated lighting system with nearly 150 automated fixtures over the stage and in the auditorium and so was the perfect place to take on such a challenging brief. The two concessions we made to the regimented idea of using no scenery was to build five large mobile light boxes which appeared during the last act of the opera and also to make full use of the theatre's five stage lifts.
